One-Word Project: SELF

Well, only running 3 months behind schedule 😉 but nevertheless, I’m proud of the fact that I’ve completed my One-Word Project that I started back in April 2012! Completing a project is not only satisfying- like finishing a long novel, a 10+ page paper,…or a bathroom remodel (hah!) 😉 but it’s also so awesome to be able to look back through the work and see how far things have come in a year. My journey with film has only just begun.

So I purposely planned the most difficult assignment for last- Self. I feel like every one of my classes in undergrad art had one project involving a self-portrait- which when the class would see it listed on the syllabus, you would hear everyone groan. And that’s exactly what happened for Madison and I 🙂 But like my wise professors knew, it is definitely the most challenging project one can be given. I guess now-a-days our generation and younger has gotten very used to the ‘selfies’ from the use of smart phones and facebook- but that trend is one I’ve definitely not done. I’m too self-conscious in front of the camera which is funny since I make money from being on the other side of the camera.

As usual, I procrastinated on this one. I wanted to think of a grand idea…to include my face in the image- use mirrors, etc. Tried to force a couple images like this but wasn’t happy with the lighting/outcome. Then, when I was cleaning up the kitchen on a day off work in the mid-morning, I noticed the light coming through the blinds onto the floor. I’ve used these shadows before and always find them interesting, but this time I noticed them hitting my leg and wrapping around it’s contour…and there was the spark that made me grab the camera. It still counts as a self-portrait, right?! 🙂

Don’t forget to check out Madison’s interpretation of SELF too.
